𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 (𝗜𝗟𝗗) & 𝗜𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 (𝗜𝗣𝗙)
On September 20, RDHK was proud to support the public education event - 「『肺』解之謎 - 間質性肺病及特發性肺纖維化公眾教育同樂日」, organized by St. James’ Settlement, the Hong Kong Thoracic Society, and the Hong Kong Lung Foundation, which brought together 72 participants.
𝘿𝙧. 𝙄𝙥 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙜-𝙃𝙤, Specialist in Respiratory Medicine, shared valuable clinical and care insights on ILD:
- 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗟𝗗: Interstitial Lung Disease encompasses a broad group of conditions affecting the tissue and space around the air sacs (alveoli).
- 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀: Diagnosis requires a holistic assessment, combining clinical symptoms, High-Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT), lung function tests, and multidisciplinary team evaluations.
- 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: IPF is the most common form of ILD, though other types of ILD can also progress to progressive pulmonary fibrosis.
- 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Two anti-fibrotic medications are currently available in Hong Kong to help slow disease progression and delay worsening symptoms.
- 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: Holistic care goes beyond medicine. Palliative care, regular follow-ups, side-effect management, rehabilitation, and robust caregiver support are essential for long-term management.
Dr. Ip highlighted a resonant quote from an international expert:
"𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴."
Healthcare teams provide specialized treatment, but a patient's lived experience is equally crucial. True holistic health care happens when medical professionals and patients work hand-in-hand.
The event also featured Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner 𝙈𝙨. 𝘾𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙮 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣, who demonstrated acupressure techniques for everyday lung health, along with on-site lung function screenings and interactive game booths to make lung health education engaging and accessible.
